A Study on the Application of ILC Block in Airport Pavement Design: A Design Approach Using FAARFIELD 공항 ILC 블록 포장 설계 적용방안 연구: FAAFILED를 이용한 설계 접근 방법

Abstract

Interlocking Concrete (ILC) block pavement is emerging as a viable alternative to traditional rigid Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and flexible Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements, especially in airport aprons constructed on soft ground. This study investigates the structural performance and applicability of ILC pavements by analyzing international case studies—including Luton, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chek Lap Kok, and Cairns airports—and validating their design using the FAARFIELD 2.2.1 program. The findings suggest that ILC block pavements offer enhanced resistance to differential settlement, economic feasibility, ease of maintenance, and construction flexibility. Structural verification results were comparable to existing standards, indicating compliance with FAA criteria. For practical application in Korea, localized design guidelines and specifications are required.

본 연구는 부등침하가 우려되는 연약지반 상에 조성되는 공항 계류장을 대상으로, 기존의 강성포장(Portland Cement Concrete, PCC) 및 연성포장(Hot Mix Asphalt, HMA)을 대체할 수 있는 Interlocking Concrete (ILC) 블록 포장의 구조적 특성과 실용적 적용 가능성을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 영국 루턴(Luton), 미국 달라스 포트워스(Dallas–Fort Worth), 홍콩 첵랍콕(Chek Lap Kok), 호주 케언즈(Cairns) 공항 등 해외 적용 사례를 분석하여 ILC 블록 포장의 경제성, 구조적 안정성 및 내구성, 부등침하에 대한 대응 성능, 유지관리 효율성 및 시공 유연성 측면에서의 장점을 종합적으로 평가하였다. 또한 기존 ILC 블록 포장의 구조 설계 결과를 FAA 공항 포장 설계 프로그램인 FAARFIELD를 활용하여 검토한 결과, ILC 블록 포장이 FAA 연성포장 설계 방법론을 적용하더라도 구조적 성능 측면에서 적용 가능함을 확인하였다. 본 연구 결과는 국내 공항 포장 분야에서 ILC 블록 포장의 활용 가능성을 제시하며, 향후 국내 공항 여건에 적합한 설계 기준 및 시방서 마련을 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
