Huff Model-Based Analysis of Air Cargo Demand Allocation in Domestic Airports

Abstract

This study aims to estimate the potential demand for air cargo at major domestic airports and compare it with actual cargo handling performance to analyze airport functional division. Using the KTDB commodity-based freight O/D data, air-cargo-suitable items were selected, and the Huff model was applied to Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae, and Cheongju Airports. Airport choice factors included airport access time and airport attractiveness, which was measured using international flight frequency and logistics facility indices. The results show that both potential and actual air cargo demand are highly concentrated at Incheon Airport, with actual handling performance showing an even stronger concentration. In contrast, Gimhae and Gimpo Airports have potential demand that is not sufficiently reflected in their actual cargo volumes. This study is meaningful in that it quantitatively identifies the gap between potential and actual air cargo demand and provides basic evidence for discussing airport function sharing and the cargo role of regional airports.

본 연구는 국내 주요 공항의 항공화물 잠재수요를 배분하고, 실제 처리실적과 비교하여 공항별 기능 분담 구조를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 2023년 KTDB 품목별 화물물동량 O/D 자료를 기반으로 항공화물 적합 품목을 선정하고, 인천공항, 김포공항, 김해공항, 청주공항을 대상으로 Huff 모형을 적용하였다. 공항 선택요인은 지역별 공항 접근시간과 공항 매력도로 구성하였으며, 공항 매력도는 국제선 운항편수 지수와 물류시설지수를 결합하여 반영하였다. 분석 결과, 국내 항공화물 잠재수요와 실제 처리실적 모두 인천공항에 집중되어 있었으며, 실제 처리실적은 잠재수요보다 더욱 강한 집중 구조를 보였다. 반면 김해공항과 김포공항은 일정 수준의 잠재수요를 보유하고 있음에도 실제 처리실적은 이에 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 잠재수요와 실제수요의 관점에서 항공화물 처리 구조를 제시하고, 향후 공항별 기능 분담에 기초자료를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
